Message from the DRE: RE Updates and October Events

Happy Autumn, friends!

Last month I shared with you all my mission for these first few months in my new role as Director of Religious Exploration: to build consistent and child-centered Sunday programming for our youth members and friends, and to build and mobilize a robust network of RE volunteers to support our Sunday offerings. I’m happy to report that we are well on our way!

Middle and High School Youth Group began meeting weekly as of 9/3. Elementary RE began on 9/17, aligned with E.N.’s beautiful Ingathering and Water Communion. And the Nursery continues to offer space to our littlest members and friends every Sunday.

We have twelve volunteers in Covenant with RE, a few more on the way, and lots of room for more. If you’re interested in volunteering, we need you! Send me an email at religious.exploration@uutallahassee.org

As we continue to get into the rhythm of our Sunday RE offerings, we are also planning lots of exciting events…

Banned Book Read In: 10/08/2023

Banned Books Week is 10/1-10/7! Why does the freedom to read and the right to freely and responsibly search for truth and meaning matter to you?

RE will host a Banned Book Read In on Sunday, October 8, from 1:00 – 3:00pm! We will have live read-alouds, silent reading spaces, and Facebook Live engagement!
You are invited to…

  • bring your favorite banned books (we’ll also have lots to share)
  • bring your favorite stuffed animal to read with you
  • bring cozy blankets, pillows, and slippers
  • bring a friend

Intergenerational Service with Storyteller David Novak: 10/22/2023

This intergenerational service explores what might be hiding behind a Halloween mask! Storyteller David Novak joins us on 10/22 to share a spooky story with a heartwarming twist. Perfect for all ages, this service will celebrate those we have loved and lost. Be prepared to play! We will create a special craft in honor of our most precious loved ones.

No Elementary RE on this day! The Nursery will be open if/as needed.

Trunk or Treat: 10/27/2023

This Halloween event will take place on Friday, October 27 from 6:00 – 8:00 PM. To register your trunk, sign up as a volunteer, or RSVP to attend, contact me! Halloween is my favorite holiday, so I’m really excited about making this a joyous and spooky celebration for all ages.

Thank you for reading! I hope to see you having lots of fun with RE this month.

May we seek joy together,

Alessandra Nysether-Santos
