Let me start with the fact that our congregation needs a leader for this initiative and highlight the fact that this is just the type of program we need to start in our church to follow through on our commitments made during the Climate Justice Revival we had last fall. So, let me briefly describe the program.
Our commitment to justice, equity, interdependence, and collective liberation call us to take bold, transformative climate actions. Green Sanctuary’s FOUR ESSENTIALS FOR CLIMATE ACTION support congregations to rise to the challenges of our times and fulfill our moral commitments.
Acting in these four areas, Congregational Transformation, Community Resilience, Justice, and Mitigation ensures that our climate work is balanced, responsive, and comprehensive.
For 35 years, UU’s have led the way on faith-filled climate actions. Let us recommit to climate justice so we can lead the way for the next 35 years.
The revitalized UUA’s Green Sanctuary 2030: Mobilizing for Climate Justice, offers a flexible, manageable, and impactful process to transform our congregations through climate justice.
The program provides FIVE APPROACHES to support a congregation’s climate justice ministry with sample agendas, questions for exploration, and more. With just ONE REQUIREMENT per ESSENTIAL element necessary each year for recognition, the new program encourages more action, and less paperwork. A congregation can apply for annual recognition once it engages in these actions. Yearly recognition encourages ongoing actions that deepens over time – which is exactly what we need to consistently advance our climate justice goals.
Those FIVE APPROACHES to support the congregation’s climate ministry include Grounding in Context, Nourishing the Team, Reimagining Thriving, Exploring Possibilities, and Mobilizing for Action.
The graphics below show the elements of the GREEN SANCTUARY 2030: MOBILIZING FOR CLIMATE JUSTICE program and a scorecard poster we can put up in the sanctuary for all to see and partake in as our climate justice actions progress.

The poster below will be in the Green Sanctuary mailbox at church.

Let me end with that crucial piece of information I started this article with. We don’t have anyone to lead this initiative, and it would be great if someone in the congregation concerned about climate justice would pick up this ball and run with it. All we really need is someone willing to pull together the work of our congregation that already meets these elements of ESSENTIAL action.
