The most difficult part of spiritual growth for many of us is living in the moment. So many of us build up protective armor against naked experience. We reach for preemptive labels and judgments to avoid feeling anxiety or hurt. But true mindfulness requires shedding that armor and accepting life in all its richness and complexity. It means being open to both gladness and sadness, health and illness, contentment and anxiety. It means experiencing what is happening now, rather than dreaming that we can escape it.
