Committees, Ministries, & Affinities, Oh My!

The Leadership Development Team is considering questions that members raised during congregational discussions last fall (in meetings held prior to the December 2024 bylaws vote).

  • What UUCT groups are currently active?
  • How do we know whether our group is a committee, team, or something else?
  • How are ministry teams and other groups held accountable (since they no longer have board oversight)?

The Leadership Development Team collected the names of over a hundred UUCT groups, past and present. With input from the Board, the Committee on Shared Ministry, and staff members, we created a list of active groups (including two “under construction”) and sorted them by category: board committees, ministry teams, affinity groups. The resulting list includes:

Sixteen board committees (we included all ad hoc committees, active and inactive)

  • Committees support our church governance
  • The board appoints fifteen of the committees. These are accountable to the board.
  • The congregation elects the Nominating Committee. It is accountable to the congregation.

Twenty-four ministry teams

  • Teams conduct the ministries (work) of the church
  • Board positions, now eliminated, previously had oversight/responsibility for twenty-three of the ministry teams (all except the Sexual Misconduct and Abuse Response Team).
  • Members or staff form new ministry teams by a process defined in the bylaws. Teams are accountable to the staff and the Committee on Shared Ministry.
  • A draft covenant for ministry teams is under review.

Eight affinity groups

  • Affinity group members share a common interest or identity.
  • The Leadership Development Team proposes that affinity groups covenant with the congregation and are accountable to the congregation.
  • A draft covenant for affinity groups is under review.
