Most of us have a need to belong. But that drive toward community can collide with another very American drive. Unless we are perfect, most of us walk through life with the need to prove something. I have spent my adult years trying to prove that I am not, as I was labeled in childhood, selfish. With that need screaming so loudly, I can become deafened to the voices of those around me. To open ourselves up to genuine connection with others, we must put our burden down: the burden of having to appear important or smart or always right. The burden of appearing perfect. True community comes from accepting the brokenness in everyone, including ourselves.
