One of the cool things about our UUCT history is that if it is documented by those in the past, then it is available for reflection to those in the present day. Let’s go on an Architectural “Space” Odyssey!
Last year, Trudy Deyle gave me some file folders that included a Space Needs Assessment (01/2000), Veranda building plans (2010), Future Fellowship Hall ideas (2000), and information about whether the congregation should purchase other property and move, or whether the congregation should stay in its existing site and build. We’re still here, so the decision to build the nursery and other rooms was the result of input from previous members.
While reading the Space Needs Assessment, I came across this information about the construction materials of the sanctuary and “pod” rooms, which were built in 1967:
“The existing facilities for the UUCT were designed in 1967 by Tallahassee architect Charles J. Benda. The influence of Frank Lloyd Wright is evident in many of the noted designs by Mr. Benda including the UUCT. Wright advocated an “organic” approach to architecture in which the built structure took their cues from the existing environmental conditions. The UUCT follows this approach by aligning its structures along the existing topography to minimize the need for site regrading. The graceful low slope roofs and staggered forms also mimic existing topography rather than contrast with it. The building materials are of exposed “Ocala” concrete masonry units that have traces of regional clay to yield a warm color tone while the exposed wood roof beams and decking also reflect the wooded characteristics of the site. The many positive aspects of the current architectural design should be understood, preserved and integrated into future built facilities.”
The Space Needs Assessment covered lots of areas at UUCT. Some facilities have been built and some areas that were mentioned would still be nice to have on site. If you are ever interested in learning more about our church’s architectural history or like looking at plans, we have a lot of historic files and plans to keep you entertained on your own odyssey.
