That experience can distort the lens through which we view society. Sibling rivalry and parental criticism distorted my perspective until I was well into middle age. Severely mistreated children may see the world as universally malignant, and that view can poison their every encounter. The first step in smoothing away our distortion is acknowledging that it exists.
