Centering BIPOC Voices: “Mistakes and Miracles”

Centering BIPOC Voices, the book discussion which focuses on reading Black, Indigenous, and People of Color authors is moving to Thursday evening, April 13th to better accommodate all our busy lives.

On April 13th, from 6:30-8:00 PM we’ll be discussing “Mistakes and Miracles: Congregations on the Road to Multiculturalism.” The authors Nancy Palmer Jones and Karin Lin examined the work of multiculturalism in several Unitarian Universalist congregations. At the end of their explorations they discovered that those congregations had some successes and some less- than-successful results, too. The book isn’t a primer for instant multiculturalism, but a thoughtful consideration of a number of factors that might run through the work of any Unitarian Universalist congregation.

UUCT has long expressed its desire to become a multicultural congregation. Recently, the congregation reaffirmed that desire by adopting the 8th Principle which invites us to work toward building a “diverse, multicultural Beloved Community.” As groups at UUCT decide to read and discuss “Mistakes and Miracles” we can see what might happen in congregations that act with intention, commitment, and patience. At UUCT, we can reflect on the past and chart a path toward a multicultural, anti-racist future here.
